Euclid Hall Workshift Policy
A Guide To The Inevitable
OBLIGATIONS
Each member of Euclid Hall needs to complete 5 workshift hours per week. Additionally, each member needs to complete 4 home improvement hours each semester. House improvement projects are generally related to the upkeep of the house.
PERMANENT/TEMPORARY SHIFTS
During the first and last weeks of the semester, members will sign up for workshifts on the temporary sign up sheets posted in the dining room. During the second week of the semester, members will fill out a permenant workshift preference form. Afterwards, permanent workshifts will be assigned, and will remain the same from week to week.
DOING WORKSHIFTS
Detailed workshift instructions are located on the workshift bulletin board in the dining room and throughout the house. Please follow these directions carefully; workshifts that are badly done are unlikely to receive credit. If you have any questions about how a workshift is suppose to be done, please do not hesitate to ask the people around.
If for some reason you will be unable to do a workshift for a given week, you are responsible for finding a replacement to do that workshift. Preferably you will simply be able to exchange workshifts with another house member. You must note these exchanges on the Workshift Exchange Sheet posted in the dining room. For permanent workshift exchanges, please see the workshift manager.
If you are unable to do your shift and are unable to find a replacement, notify the workshift manager at least 48 hours before the workshift is suppose to be done. If a replacement still cannot be found, you will only be single fined rather than double fined (see "Penalties" below).
CENTRAL LEVEL WORKSHIFTS
Each semester every house in the USCA system need to fulfill a certain number of workshift hours to the central bureaucratic structure of the co-op system. These hour requirements are calculated according to a house's share of the total USCA occupancy. Due to its extremely small size, Euclid has a very small hour commitment. These hours are filled in a variety of ways- from the Board Rep to the SMUC Rep to compensated positions to hourly office/clerical help. To apply for one of the office/clerical positions at the Central Office or Central Kitchen, see the workshift manager during the first week of classes. Keep in mind, however, that since these shifts are primarily assigned on the basis of meeting a house's hour requirement, Euclid will only ever have one or two people filling office/clerical positions at the central level.
UP/DOWN HOURS
Each week an up/down hour sheet will be posted for all house members (excluding managers). You are aiming for 0 hours, which means that you have fulfilled 5 hours of workshift a week. "Up hours", or hours above 0 means that you have done more than 5 hours of workshift a week. If you accumulate more than 5 up hours in a semester, any further up hours will simply be donated to the house and not credited to you. However, "down hours", or hours below 0, are BAD-it means that you have not fulfilled less than 5 hours a week of workshift. You will be fined if you have "down hours." If you notice an error on the up/down hours sheet, you must bring it to the attention of the workshift manager within a week. Corrections will not be made after more than a week has passed.
PENALTIES
If you do not do a shift, but have told the workshift manager at least 48 hours in advance and have actively sought a replacement, you will be single-fined for that shift. In other words, you would be fined 2 hours for not doing a dinner dishes shift, for example. However, if you do not do a shift, and do not find a replacement, and do not tell the workshift manager, you will be considered to have "blown" the shift. This means that you will be double-fined to owe 4 hours of workshift instead of 2 for not doing dinner dishes. These double-fines can add up quickly to an enormous amount. For example, blowing a head cook shift would mean being fined for 6 hours and be stoned to death by hungry house members.
"Down hours" can be made up by doing extra kitchen/maintenance workshift hours. Fining, however, will take place every fourth week (week 4, week 8, ...). The policy of Euclid Hall is to fine a member for all hours owed beneath a grace threshold of 5 hours. In other words, if after week 8 you are down 9 hours, you would be fined for 4 (9-5=4) hours. Since the fining rate is $7.50, this would be a $30 fine. You will, however, be responsible for ALL of your down hours at the end of the semester. Moreover, paying a fine does not remove your obligation to make up down hours. Continuing the previous example, that house member would still have to do 9 hours of extra workshifts to be brought back to 0 hours.
Additionally, the workshift manager is now required by central level decree to begin termination procedures against any member who drops to -20 hours at any time during the semester. Termination is a long and yucky process that is described for your reading enjoyment in the house by-laws (available from the house manager).
