A "crutch" shared by my instrument instructor many summers ago was to write C-R-A-F-T. Vertically on the left margin of my kneeboard notepad. When the clearance arrived, just fill in the blanks. C= Clearance=N12345 is cleared to Wazoo City Airport R= Route= via the Spamcan One Departure, V88, V34, direct A=Altitude=climb and maintain 3000, expect 6000 10 minutes after departure F=Frequency=departure frequency 123.45 T=Transponder=squawk 2345 When you get ready for the approach, another crutch is handy. H-A-C H=Heading=Piper 34A, turn right, heading 210, A=Altitude=Maintain 4000 until established on the localizer, C=Clearance=Cleared for the Localizer Delta approach to runway 24 Clearances come in a standard sequence and the crutches help you organize it quickly. Doesn't hurt to learn the handy abbreviations so you can understand your high-speed scribbling of clearances. Best of luck. The instrument rating is a mind-bender, but well worth the effort.
