Is it a good/bad idea, since he's not a CFI? Ask your CFII. At some point you'll be practicing approaches, and that's usually where you'll fly with a safety pilot. But if you're not yet ready, it's a waste of time, and may even be unsafe. >2) Must your check pilot have instr rating, or any private pilot > check pilot will suffice (under the condition that the flight is VFR > while you're under the hood, of course). No. Read the FARs. The safety pilot must be rated in the category and class of aircraft. >3) If I have a pilot friend as a check pilot while I'm under the hood, > will both of us log as PIC? Possibly. If you agree before taking off that the safety pilot is ACTING as PIC (therefore must be rated and current to carry passengers) he can log PIC (for acting PIC) and you can log PIC as "sole manipulator of the controls". This duality exists ONLY while under the hood, since once the hood is off, the second pilot is no longer a required crew member. There's a lot of stuff in the archives on this topic, much of it contradictory and confusing. When I fly as a safety pilot, I don't log PIC, ever. >4) During your training, must you train in VFR weather? My old instructor > said it's best to train before the bad season in Jan/Feb (which I > thought was odd because training in actual instr condition gives > you a better IFR experience, no?) No, but to train in actual IMC, your instructor must be PIC (since you need to file an IFR plan) ... although you can LOG PIC as "sole manipulator of the controls". I have about 11 hours in actual in 30 hours total IR training. >5) Can I use my X-Ctry time as a student/private pilot to count toward > the X-Ctry time? Solo x/c time as a student counts. Dual does not. >6) My club has a Pacer-MK II, AST-300, Elite 200 Plus, Elite Sim 6, > and Elite Sim 5. I have absolutely no idea what they are and if > they are any good. Anyone here have experience with them? Nope. I use Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 (Pro Edition) for my personal practice on my home computer. I have the yokes and pedals, and it gives a reasonable simulation, as good as the Jepp and Elites I've seen. Dennis (4B8) PP-ASEL (IR student) "I know just enough to know that I don't know enough"
